FHIR Services supporting ONC HTI-1 plus expanded HL7 UDAP FAST Capabilities
SAN DIEGO, Calif., July 1, 2025 -- EMR Direct, a leading developer of software for the secure exchange of health information, today announced the release of enhanced HL7® FHIR® services to Interoperability Engine 2026 developers, enabling patient access and business-to-business use cases, while also meeting ONC Health IT certification criteria and requirements for information sharing and the Medicare Promoting Interoperability program.
The Interoperability Engine solution allows health IT vendors to rapidly deploy the regularly-expanding set of ONC-required HL7 FHIR APIs, most recently calling for USCDI v3 and US Core 6.1.0 support prior to December 31, 2025. This capability helps partners of EMR Direct meet application access and standardized API for patient and population services criteria 170.315(g)(7), 170.315(g)(9), and 170.315(g)(10). The EMR Direct FHIR platform includes native support for SMART and UDAP™, the industry’s consensus-based approach to scalable and secure deployment of FHIR and digital identities used in healthcare transactions, and easily accommodates workflows such as TEFCA Facilitated FHIR, the Carequality FHIR IG, and other user-facing transactions that demand strong digital identity credentials and that can be provided through a variety of trusted commercial identity services. Support for networked digital identities through UDAP Tiered OAuth is available with Interop Engine 2026 in any of its forms—whether customers choose EMR Direct’s complete FHIR product suite or OAuth/OpenID-only services (used with a partner’s own FHIR server to outsource OAuth and OpenID Connect), either of which includes support for UDAP.
In line with its mission to simplify interoperability, EMR Direct’s API management platform also includes a number of resources to support client app developers at the HealthToGo® App Studio site, included with both complete FHIR and OAuth/OpenID-only Interop Engine services. Partners using Interop Engine as a component of their ONC FHIR certification benefit from an outsourced FHIR client app store and client app onboarding, maintenance of Service Base URL lists, hosted public FHIR API documentation, and community-based developer support which are all part of EMR Direct’s API management platform.
In addition to being an operator of software as a service and Registration Authority/Certificate Authority services, EMR Direct is also a software developer and published the first API for custom integration of Direct messaging back in 2013. The sample code, available in a variety of application frameworks, was designed for easy integration and its accessibility has led to one in four vendors certified for Direct-related criteria choosing EMR Direct. EMR Direct’s FHIR, OAuth/OpenID Connect and UDAP services can be integrated using a similar model, and include extensive sample code and complimentary email-based technical support.
Beyond custom integration, EMR Direct’s Health Information Service Provider (HISP) services can be accessed using SMTP/POP, Epic or MEDITECH XDR endpoints, or just a web browser. Directory services are available through the Direct integration API, and allow any authorized Direct service customer to locate addresses within a nationwide network of over 2.8 million endpoints. Native support for Direct Message Context through the API makes light work of sending or receiving Patient Event Notifications via Direct, as required by CMS, or supporting 360x.
Health IT professionals can sign up for a complimentary Interoperability Engine Developer account including access to SDKs, a test FHIR endpoint and sandbox FHIR client app, detailed Inferno and ETT/DCDT testing guidance, and a complimentary test Direct address at:
